In June 2012, Mr. Christopher Litzgus received a distressing call from a friend, and fellow Edmonton Transit System employee, who indicated that he was going to jump from the High Level Bridge. After calling the police, Mr. Litzgus quickly went to the bridge to find his friend with one leg already over the rail. As the friend attempted to lift his other leg over, Mr. Litzgus grabbed him from behind and the two struggled until they fell onto the sidewalk.
Despite his distressed friend’s attempts to get back to the railing, Mr. Litzgus managed to hold him until police arrived. Based on what police uncovered, it was very likely that Mr. Litzgus’ friend would have jumped off the bridge to his death, were it not for Mr. Litzgus’ quick actions in that dangerous situation.
He placed himself at great risk to help a friend and coworker in need.
