On March 22, 2011, a female brandishing a knife entered a northside liquor store and immediately went behind the service counter. Raising the knife over her head, she lunged at the store owner who was working behind the counter and indicated that she was robbing the store. Ms. Darlene Lorie, a liquor store employee, saw the store owner wrestling with the woman. Without hesitation, Ms. Lorie approached the pair as they continued to struggle at the counter and was able to grab the woman’s arm and remove the knife from her hand. Despite receiving a substantial cut to her thumb, Ms. Lorie still had the wherewithal to call 911. Employees held onto the woman until police arrived. Ms. Lorie made a quick decision to help a coworker in need, even though it meant putting herself at great personal risk.
