In the early morning hours of Sept. 9, 2012, a chaotic and violent scene erupted on Whyte Avenue. During an altercation between two males, a man was stabbed several times and a woman was slashed while trying to intervene. The male suspect fled the scene and would have likely gotten away, were it not for the calm, and very solid, Mr. Kent Ashbey.
Mr. Ashbey was working as a door attendant at a tavern about a half block away, when he heard the commotion. Stepping out into the sidewalk, he noticed the suspect with a knife in his hand. Concerned for the safety of others, Mr. Ashbey stopped the suspect, ordered him to put the knife down and arrested him. While standing on the knife to keep it safe and holding onto the suspect, Mr. Ashbey called 911. Police arrived to find Mr. Ashbey calmly controlling the scene. Mr. Ashbey took courageous steps that put his personal safety at risk and likely prevented further injuries that evening.
