October 2016 will forever be etched in the minds of these citizens. It was this day complete strangers were drawn together to assist a woman trapped inside a burning vehicle after being struck by another vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. Despite the heat and imminent danger, Mr. Wajaras attempted to remove the seatbelt from the trapped driver, and Mr. Seifeddine pulled the broken windshield away to assist in removing her. Mr. Sacks, Mr. Brewster, and Mr. Chalmers approached the volatile scene and used fire extinguishers to reduce the flames and further the rescue attempt. Despite their heroic efforts, the fire intensified and the woman died at the scene.
The nominating officer said it best: “These civilians and our police officer reacted under an intense stressful moment that most would not, and remained composed while showing bravery throughout their ordeal. Their teamwork, brave attempts and quick actions can give comfort to the family, friends and our community that lives DO matter.”
