In March 2012, police were tracking a possible impaired driver through a residential area. As the suspect was fleeing police, Ms. Yesenia Franco passed by and took note of identifying features of the vehicle. A short time later Ms. Franco spotted the same vehicle parked not far from her own house, and realized that the driver had eluded police. The suspect then approached Ms. Franco and asked her to call him a taxi. Pretending to call a cab company for the suspect, Ms. Franco remained calm and composed… and instead called police. Likely becoming suspicious, the suspect fled on foot. Ms. Franco provided responding officers with the man’s direction of travel and description. He was arrested and charged with several drug, alcohol and driving offences.
One of the investigating officers described Ms. Franco as a “truly remarkable young lady” and went on to say that “If not for the fast thinking and fantastic information provided by Ms. Franco, this criminal may have gotten away and continued to wreak havoc in the community. If our city had more people like Ms. Franco, our streets would be much safer.”
