Vacancy on Edmonton Police Commission

Commissioner Murray Billett has announced his resignation from Edmonton’s Police Commission effective December 31, 2009. City Council is now recruiting to fill the vacancy on the board.

Mr. Billett was appointed to the commission on January 1, 2005. Commissioners are appointed by City Council for a term of 2 or 3 years, up to a maximum of 6 years.

“My early departure is a result of growing work and personal commitments,” said Mr. Billett. “I am proud to leave the Commission knowing that during my five-year tenure we hired an exceptional Chief of Police, substantially increased the number of police officers on the street, strengthened community policing, successfully launched Air 2, and engaged in meaningful discussions with community residents,” said Mr. Billett.

“Murray is a well-known, community activist who has played a pivotal role in shaping policing in Edmonton,” said Commission Chairman Brian Gibson. “In his five years with the commission, Murray has shown commitment to good governance and a passion for policing that will be difficult to replace.”

Mr. Billett is Labour Relations Officer with the United Nurses of Alberta and a human rights activist who champions minority groups, including the Gay Community.

City Council is looking to fill the vacancy with an applicant from a diverse background and experience in either finance/accounting or human resources. The application deadline is 4:30 pm October 9, 2009.
